Data on Gun Crimes

In the U.S.

  • More than 10,000 people are killed with guns each year.
  • In 2001, guns were involved in over 330,000 violent crimes and in 63 percent of all homicides.

    In Spokane County

  • Law enforcement officers in Spokane County confiscated 2,042 guns from Jan. 1, 2000 to Jan. 31, 2003, a rate of almost two per day.
  • More than two out of every three guns seized were linked to crimes related to drugs, stolen property, violent crime and people illegally possessing a gun.
  • Firearms were the weapon of choice in half of the homicides in Spokane County in 2002; creating a priceless toll on human lives.
  • Already this year in Spokane County there have been 7 drive-by shootings; 8 armed robberies; 22 arrests for unlawful possession of firearms.
  • Between January-September 2003 in Spokane, crimes involving firearms have included:
  • 32 assaults
  • 2 car jackings
  • 5 homicides
  • 30 intimidation with a weapon
  • 2 road rage
  • 53 robberies
  • 17 drive-by shootings
  • 79 unlawful firearm possessions
  • In Tri-Cities Area

  • Law enforcement officers in the Tri-Cities area confiscated 295 guns from Jan. 1, 2000 to Jan. 31, 2003, a rate of two per week.
  • One in 10 guns was used in violent crimes — half of them homicides.
  • A quarter of the guns seized were taken from people illegally in possession of them.

    In Yakima

  • Law enforcement officers in Yakima County confiscated 942 guns from Jan. 1, 2000 to Jan. 31, 2003, a rate of 25 per month.
  • Nearly half of the guns seized were taken from people illegally in possession of them.
  • One of six guns was used in violent crimes - more than a third of them homicides.
